Transportation Policy Makers Try to Put Their “Money Where Their Mouths Are”

SILVER SPRING, MD — To reduce the number of single occupancy vehicles on the road and meet their own transportation policy goals, staff in the Montgomery Regional Office of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission are being challenged to participate in the agency’s Clever Commute Day on Friday, September 30.

Montgomery County Department of Park and Planning Director Charles R. Loehr issued a special challenge to each headquarters employee to save expensive fuel and improve air quality by riding in a carpool, hopping on the bus, taking a train or walking to work that day.

“Except for carpools, we’re looking for a virtually empty lot outside our building on Clever Commute Day,” he said. “It’s our turn to decrease the number of employees who drive alone and put our money where our mouths are,” added Loehr.

Media who wish to follow a staff member who has always driven alone to work and never used transit or alternative forms of commuting — until Clever Commute Day – may contact Marion Joyce, 301/495-4602.

WHO: Montgomery County Planning Board Chairman Derick P. Berlage will ride his bike to M-NCPPC headquarters from his Kensington home
Staff members will walk to work, ride bikes, take the MARC train, take Metro, hop on a Metrobus or Ride On bus and carpool.

WHAT: Clever Commute Day at M-NCPPC’s Montgomery Regional Office.

WHEN: Friday, September 30, morning and afternoon rush hours.
