SILVER SPRING, MDMontgomery Parks, part of the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission is offering 88 unique summer camps in 2014 spanning a variety of interests including ice skating, tennis, golf, gardening, outdoor adventure, nature, and more. Summer camps are available for tots to teens at all skill levels and at hundreds of locations across the county. A $25 discount is being offered for early registration for a select group of camps. Registration is open at www.ParkPASS.org.

A sampling of 2014 summer camps is outlined below; a complete list can be found at www.MontgomeryParks.org/camps, where camp searches may be filtered by age, location and key words. The 2014 Summer Camps guide is available online at www.MontgomeryParks.org/guide. Print copies may be found at select Montgomery Parks’ facilities, Montgomery County Recreation centers, government buildings and libraries while supplies last.

SPORTS CAMPS

  • Golf & So Much More! Camp at South Germantown Driving Range

Ages 6-14, Offered throughout the summer

This 50/50 split camp gives kids time to try golf with a PGA pro in the morning, then let loose in the afternoon playing tennis, basketball, archery, mini-golf and other fun activities.

  • Ice Hockey and Figure Skating Camps at Cabin John Ice Rink and Wheaton Ice Arena

Ages 6-12, Offered throughout the summer

Campers will brush up on their skating, form, and gain conditioning on the ice. Specialty ice skating camps include dance clinics, theatre on ice, and synchronized skating. Summer Fun Ice Skating Camp offers activities off the ice such as tennis, arts and crafts and outdoor games.

  • Summer Skateboard and Inline Skating Camps at Olney Manor Skate Park

Ages 6-13, Offered throughout the summer

In skateboard camp, participants learn to push, ride, tack, turn olly, kick flip grind, stall, drop in and get air—all from professional instructors from American Inline Skating. Inline Skating Camp teaches campers to gear up, stand up, skate, stop, avoid falling down, turn, crossover, skate backwards, negotiate obstacles and skate safely.

  • Tennis and Tennis Combo Camps at Pauline Betz Addie Tennis and Wheaton Indoor Tennis

Ages 5 – 14, Offered throughout the summer

Montgomery Parks offers all-day tennis camp and combo camps featuring a half-day of tennis instruction paired with other sports and activities such as golf, ice skating, outdoor games and more.

 

NATURE, GARDENING AND SCIENCE CAMPS

  • Uncaged: The Wild World of Birds at Meadowside Nature Center

Ages 9-12, Offered week of 6/23

Campers learn to identify birds by sight and sound, from the tiny hummingbird to the majestic eagle and everything in between. Activities include feeding and caring for the hawks, eagle and other raptors that live at Meadowside, learning how and why we band birds, following a bluebird trail, games and a field trip to band real ospreys at Patuxent River Park.

  •  Nature Film School Camp at Locust Grove Nature Center

Ages 8-10, Offered the week of 6/23

Campers learn how nature documentaries get made including how to design and document natural subjects. Each camper produces his own film to screen for friends and family.

  •  Lakeside Arts Camp at Black Hill Visitor Center

Ages 6-8, Offered week of 8/18

Children will explore nature through the arts, gaining inspiration from the lake, streams, meadows, and forests of Black Hill Regional Park. Campers experiment with different art mediums such as painting, nature journaling, sculpting, drama and music, and at the end of the week, invite their friends and family to an art show featuring their new masterpieces.

  •  Parent and Child Nature Camp at Brookside Nature Center

Ages 4-6, Offered the week of 8/11

Parents and children explore nature together investigating the woods, stream, ponds and forest edge to learn about plants and animals that live there. Finish the week on Friday with a campfire and lunch.

  •  Farms, Food, Fun, and Sun!

Ages 9-11, Offered the week of 7/11

Have a week of fun learning about farms and food. Visit three farms, a farmer’s market and learn where food comes from and how to cook it. Participate in a cooking class, harvest a few veggies and fruits, see the countryside and take a hayride! Campers also plant their own container vegetable gardens, and take a trip to the famous Herr’s chip factory.

  • Week in the Park at Wheaton Ice Arena

Ages 6 – 12, Offered throughout the summer

Montgomery Parks’ most popular camp features indoor tennis and ice skating lessons, a field trip to South Germantown Splash Playground and Miniature Golf, nature walks, and miniature train and carousel rides among other activities.

  • Outdoor Adventure Camp at Cabin John Ice Rink

Ages 8 – 14, Offered throughout the summer

Campers discover the outdoors in this high-adventure day camp with activities ranging from white water rafting, zip lines, rappelling, aerial obstacle and ropes courses, fishing, canoeing, go-carting and more.

  •  Archaeology Camp for Children at Needwood Mansion

Ages 9 – 13, Offered throughout the summer

Campers find out what it takes to be an archaeologist working alongside trained professionals. Hands-on activities include mapping, soil identification and artifact processing. Campers also take a field trip to a historic site to do some real excavating.
