The Montgomery County Planning Board is inviting testimony on the Public Hearing (Preliminary) Draft of the Damascus Master Plan, Thursday, November 4, 2004, 7:30 p.m. at the Montgomery County Council's 7th floor Council Hearing Room, 100 Maryland Avenue, Rockville, Maryland.
You have a formal opportunity to express your views to the Planning Board on the concepts, individual recommendations and implementation techniques discussed in the draft Master Plan. Later this winter, the Planning Board will consider the public testimony and the staff's recommendations during its worksessions on the Plan to be held in the M-NCPPC auditorium, 8787 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring, Maryland. Maryland Emancipation Day Events
Saturday, November 6, 2004
Oakley Cabin, Woodlawn Manor and the Sandy Spring Slave Museum

On Saturday, November 6, you're invited to celebrate Maryland Emancipation Day, the freeing of slaves in Maryland, with a variety of activities at three Montgomery County sites: Woodlawn Manor, Sandy Spring Slave Museum and African Art Gallery, and Oakley Cabin.
At 10 a.m. at Woodlawn Manor, 16501 Norwood Road, Sandy Spring, Alan Spears, Associate Director of Diversity with the National Parks Conservation Association, will speak about the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom. After the talk, participants are invited to join a hike on this 1½ mile trail to Sandy Spring. A shuttle van will carry people back to Woodlawn.
From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Sandy Spring Slave Museum and African Art Gallery, 18524 Brooke Road in Sandy Spring, will be open with lunch for sale by Ribs-on-the-Run.
Oakley Cabin, 3610 Brookeville Road in Brookeville, will be open from 12 noon to 4 p.m. with reenactors from the 54th Massachusetts regiment, living history portrayers, and hot cider and cornbread. Beginning at 2 p.m., a program of celebration features the Gospel Choir "Promises of God," and speaker, Anthony Cohen of the Menare Foundation, author of The Underground Railroad in Montgomery County and trekker on the Underground Railroad routes to Canada. Mr. Cohen will speak on "New Discoveries and Insights into the Underground Railroad in Montgomery County." Parking is available at Longwood Recreation Center, 19300 Georgia Avenue, Brookeville, and a free shuttle bus will carry people to the Cabin.
