Montgomery Parks Appoints Bill Tyler Southern Parks Division Chief

Tyler brings 26 years of experience in parks and recreation field including past positions with the City of Baltimore, the City of Las Vegas and Montgomery County.

SILVER SPRING, MDMontgomery Parks, part of the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) announced today the appointment of Bill Tyler as chief of the Southern Parks Division. In his new role, Tyler will be responsible for an $11.7 million annual operating budget and will oversee 147 full-time employees as well as seasonal staff. He will be responsible for daily park operations, budget administration and facilities for the Southern region which features nearly 200 parks, including Cabin John- and Wheaton Regional Parks, and Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Park.

Tyler joins the Department from the City of Baltimore Department of Recreation and Parks where he served as the Recreation Bureau Chief since July 2010. Prior to that position, Tyler spent over six years with the City of Las Vegas as Recreation Division Manager at the Department of Leisure Services. He also served in the Montgomery County Department of Recreation for a decade, first as a regional supervisor and later as a division chief; and prior to that was executive director of the YMCA National Capital Area in Prince George’s County, MD.

Tyler is a native of North Carolina. He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Counseling Psychology with a minor in Physical Education and Recreation Management, from the University of North Carolina, Pembroke.  He is a member of various professional organizations and committees, including the Black Male Achievement Mentoring Program, National Recreation and Parks Association, Maryland Recreation and Parks Association, Montgomery County Workforce Diversity Council, former vice-president of the African American Employees Association and Board member for Montgomery County’s Task force on Mentoring.  He has received diversity training and certifications from The Multicultural Institute of Washington, is a graduate of the National Recreation and Parks Executive Development School, Montgomery County Leadership Development Institute and City of Las Vegas Diversity Champions Leadership program.
