SILVER SPRING, MD—The Montgomery County Department of Parks, part of the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC), is teaming up with Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) to open three new community gardens sites on MCPS property by spring 2011. Parks and schools staff will host three public meetings this October and November to discuss the potential garden sites.
The Department of Parks has been operating its community gardens program since May 2009. More than 300 community gardeners are presently using the four community gardens open on parkland: the Sligo Mill Overlook Community Garden, Briggs Chaney Community Garden, Bradley Park Community Garden and South Germantown Recreational Park Community Garden.
During these upcoming meetings, the public will have an opportunity to learn more about the department’s program, ask questions about the proposed MCPS sites and share their thoughts and input on the project. The sites for these public meetings are the proposed MCPS sites for community gardens.
