New Community Garden in Montgomery Parks at South Germantown Recreational Park, Applications Now Accepted

BOYDS, MD—The Montgomery County Department of Parks is now accepting applications for its newest community garden in Montgomery Parks—the South Germantown Community Garden, 10841 Central Park Circle in Boyds.

The South Germantown Community Garden has twenty-two 400 square feet plots available for rent for a fee of $50 annually per plot, and twenty-one 200 square feet plots for $30 annually.  On-site water and deer fencing is provided.

As space is limited, interested gardeners are encouraged to submit applications for gardening at this new location by Tuesday, April 27, 2010.  Applicants will be placed in a lottery for the location and assigned plots. The Department of Parks will begin notifying selected gardeners of plot assignments for this location on Thursday, April 29, 2010. However, applications for all community garden locations in the parks are accepted on a continual basis. As needed, applicants are placed on a waiting list for selected locations until plots become available.

Plots are still available for gardening at the Briggs Chaney Community Garden, 2161 Briggs Chaney Road in Silver Spring. Plots at the Briggs Chaney Community Garden are 625 square feet each in size and available for a fee of $70 per plot, annually.

The Department of Parks has opened two additional community gardens in the parks: the Sligo Mill Overlook Community Garden, 6400 Orchard Avenue in Takoma Park, opened in May 2009 has a 35-person waiting list; and the Bradley Park Community Garden, which opened this month, has a 20-person waiting list.

“The community gardens continue to be well-received amenities in the parks,” said Department of Parks Community Gardens Coordinator Ursula Sabia Sukinik. “We are very pleased about the community interest and support for the gardens.”
