Opening Day at Oakley Cabin African American Museum & Park this Saturday, April 24

OLNEY, MD—Oakley Cabin African American Museum & Park, 3610 Brookeville Road in Olney, opens for the season this Saturday, April 24 from 12:00 noon through 4:00 pm.

“We have a great opening day celebration planned for Saturday and invite everyone to be a part of history by coming out and joining us,” said Department of Parks Museum Manager Shirl Spicer.

This Saturday’s Opening Day Celebration at Oakley Cabin will include a traditional African libation ceremony, an archaeology dig, marble making fun for children and guided tours of the cabin for the entire family—all FREE of charge.

Oakley Cabin is open for the 2010 season from 12:00 noon through 4:00 pm each second and fourth Saturday through November. The cabin will also be open on Saturday, November 6, 2010 for the annual Maryland Emancipation Day Celebration.  Free guided tours of Oakley Cabin are given by trained volunteer docents each Saturday the cabin is open.

To become a trained volunteer docent at the historic Oakley Cabin, register online at www.ParksVolunteers.org and attend the free volunteer training on Saturday, May 1, 2010 from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm at Agricultural History Farm Park Activity Center. Volunteers learn how to “make history come alive” through hands-on living history experiences, such as basket weaving, darning socking, drying herbs and more. Volunteers must be 16 years of age or older and able to commit to six Saturdays per year.
