MEDIA ADVISORY: Montgomery Parks Hosts Community Meeting, Wednesday, Nov. 4 on Proposed Skate Spot at Woodside Urban Park

SILVER SPRING, MD—The Montgomery County Department of Parks will host a community meeting on Wednesday, November 4 to discuss the proposed installation of a new Skate Spot in Woodside Urban Park, located at 8800 Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring.

A Skate Spot is a small skate park which generally contains street-style obstacles such as ledges or embankments. The Department of Parks is proposing to locate the new Skate Spot on the former paddle tennis court between the gymnasium and basketball court at Woodside Urban Park.  The approximate size of the proposed facility is 3,000 square feet and the proposed design would feature concrete modular elements on a concrete pad. The Department of Parks anticipates having the skating elements in place at the park by the end of January 2010. The Skate Spot is intended as an interim use in the park, until a permanent skate facility can be considered as part of the overall renovation plan for the park.

The Department of Parks sent notices in October to Woodside Urban Park neighbors and other interested parties, requesting comments and suggestions about this proposed Skate Spot. This community meeting is scheduled to provide information about the facility in response to the feedback the department received.

In addition to the Skate Spot, the Department of Parks is also planning the renovation for Woodside Urban Park. The preliminary facility planning process for the entire park’s renovation began this fall. Concepts will be presented to the community for input in March 2010. Additional opportunities for public comment will be invited and welcomed throughout that process.

Public comments and suggestions on the Skate Spot may be sent to Department of Parks Project Manager Ellen Masciocchi at Ellen.Masciocchi@MontgomeryParks.org, 301-650-2867 or Montgomery Parks, M-NCPPC, Park Development Division, 9500 Brunett Avenue, Silver Spring, MD 20901.
