CALENDAR LISTING: Historic and Cultural Events in the Parks this September

SILVER SPRING, MD—The Montgomery County Department of Parks is offering some exciting events this September at a number of the historic and cultural sites in the county’s parks system. These events range from a local history celebration at the 1820s Oakley Cabin to a bluegrass farm festival to a 19th century doctor’s visit to a literal old-school lesson at the historic Kingsley Schoolhouse. Many are FREE to the public.

History Day

Celebrate local history at Oakley Cabin during this FREE community event presented by the Friends of Oakley Cabin and the Underground Railroad.

Bluegrass on the Farm
Saturday, September 13

An annual event, the Bluegrass on the Farm festival is a spectacular day of bluegrass and old time music. This year’s festival is starring Randy Waller and the Country Gentlemen.  Also performing are Blue Daze, Patuxent Partners and The Farm Band. The cost is $15 at the gate, which includes parking or $12 in advance online at www.bluegrassonthefarm.com.

Medical Practices during the 19th Century

"Dr. Edward Stonestreet," reenacted by historic interpreter Charles Hickey, opens up his little black doctor’s back from the 1800s during this FREE event about health and medicine during the 19th century.

Lessons from the Past

Shuttle service to the schoolhouse and back

Take a walk down memory lane to the one-room schoolhouse to learn about life in the past during this FREE event. Meet some of the students who attended school here. Write on slate boards, carry water from the stream in buckets and play a game of dodge ball, a popular game in the early 1900s. Families will also enjoy sack races, cake walks, nail-driving contests and more. Bring a picnic and enjoy lunch by the stream. This event is sponsored in part by the Friends of Little Bennett Regional Park and the Clarksburg Historical Society, Inc.
