SILVER SPRING, MD—This Thursday, the Montgomery County Planning Board will take up the first of the Department of Parks’ final recommendations on one of the park activity buildings in the county’s parks system with discussion of the future of the Randolph Hills Park Activity Building in Silver Spring.
Parks staff will recommend that the Randolph Hills Park Activity Building be removed and replaced with the playground, which is currently located in an environmentally sensitive area of the park. The building has been closed since August 2007 because it is no longer safe or suitable for public use.
Last June, the Department of Parks briefed the Planning Board on preliminary recommendations for managing all the 31 small to medium-sized park activity buildings in the Montgomery parks system based on a professional assessment of the buildings’ current condition, level of use and maintenance requirements. Some management recommendations based on the study raised community concerns.
In response, parks staff extended the public comment period and community dialogue on the other buildings. Options for the Randolph Hills Park Activity Building will be discussed Thursday because of its failure to meet safety standards for public use and occupancy.
