Montgomery County Planning Board and Planning Department Events in June 2019
June 1 – Montgomery Planning will host a community event for the Aspen Hill Vision Zero Study from 10 a.m. to noon at Panera Bread (13521 Connecticut Ave, Aspen Hill, MD) in the Aspen Hill Shopping Center. Spanish language interpretation will be available. The event will feature a graphic recording artist who will draw ideas from community members on how to make walking, biking, transit and driving safe in the Aspen Hill community.
June 4 – Montgomery Planning and the Dallas-based nonprofit Better Block Foundation will host a meeting starting at 7 p.m. in the Burtonsville Elementary School (15516 Old Columbia Pike, Burtonsville, MD) to launch the Burtonsville Placemaking Festival effort. This evening event will feature a keynote presentation about community placemaking from Better Block CEO Jason Roberts. Attendees are encouraged to share thoughts and ideas on how placemaking could be used as a tool to build community in the Burtonsville area. Learn more about Burtonsville Placemaking.
June 6 – The Planning Board will be briefed on the Germantown Plan for the Town Sector Zone Working Draft and will hold a work session for the Rock Spring and White Flint 2 Urban Design Guidelines. Board members will review a proposed amendment to the 2016-2020 Subdivision Staging Policy. June 12 – The Montgomery County Historic Preservation Commission will meet at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Planning Department (8787 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring, MD) to discuss historic area work permit applications and other issues. The applications are due 21 days before the meeting.

June 13 – Montgomery Planning and the Silver Spring Arts and Entertainment District will host their third Art Walk to promote local businesses and public art in downtown Silver Spring. The Art Walk event will start at 5:30 p.m. at the Silver Branch Brewing Company (8401 Colesville Road, Silver Spring, MD). The tour will begin with a briefing on the Purple Line Art-in-Transit project and continue with stops to discuss public art at three residential buildings. The final destination will be the United Therapeutics headquarters with a tour of artworks both inside and outside of the building. June 26 – Montgomery Planning is launching a new initiative, Thrive Montgomery 2050, to update Montgomery County’s General Plan for its future growth and development over the next 30 years. This effort begins with Thrive Week, a series of five community gatherings where community members can learn more about Thrive Montgomery 2050 and graphic artists will draw participants’ ideas for the future of the county. The first event will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Shady Grove Farmer’s Market, rain or shine, in the rear parking lot on the Rockville campus of Johns Hopkins University (Key West Avenue and Broschart Road, Rockville, MD). June 27 – The second event of Thrive Week is a yappy hour from 6 to 8 p.m. in Bethesda’s Elm Street Park (4600 Elm Street, Bethesda, MD) hosted by Montgomery Parks. Participants are encouraged to bring their dogs, learn about the General Plan Update and share their ideas about the future of Montgomery County.
June 27 – The Planning Board will hold a meeting to review regulatory cases. For more details, consult the Planning Board meeting agenda, which will be posted 10 days before the meeting.
June 28 – The third event of Thrive Week will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. in the splash park and mini-golf facility of South Germantown Recreational Park (18041 Central Park Circle, Boyds, MD).
June 29 – Montgomery Planning’s Historic Preservation Office is sponsoring a 15-mile bike ride as part of Heritage Days 2019, a free festival organized by Heritage Montgomery. The tour will include several historic sites, including a grist mill, a Quaker meeting house and the Oakley Cabin African American Museum and Park. Meet at 9:30 a.m. at the Brookeville Beer Garden (20315 Georgia Avenue, Brookeville, MD) for a 10 a.m. departure and expect to return to the same location at around 12 noon.
June 29 – Thrive Week’s fourth event will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Ellsworth Fountain Plaza (916 Ellsworth Drive, Silver Spring, MD). Come listen to local bands while sharing your ideas about the county’s future.
June 30 – Montgomery Parks will host the final event of Thrive Week, Sunday Funday, at Wheaton Veterans Urban Park (11200 Amherst Avenue, Silver Spring, MD) from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. This event will include activities for families and kids.
About the Montgomery County Planning Board
The Montgomery County Planning Board oversees the Montgomery County Planning Department and Department of Parks and advises the Montgomery County Council on land use and community planning. The board reviews all plans, development applications and regulatory cases, providing guidelines for the pattern and pace of future development and preserving historic resources throughout the 323,000-acre county. In addition, the board manages the county’s 36,895-acre park system that includes 421 parks. Board members also serve as Commissioners of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, a bi-county agency established in 1927 to protect public land.
