Community events will encourage the public to envision the county’s future through Thrive Montgomery 2050 and update the county’s General Plan
SILVER SPRING, MD – The Montgomery County Planning Board and the Planning Department, both part of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, are pleased to announce their September 2019 calendar of events. September 5 –The Planning Board returns from its August recess to review the scope of work for the new Pedestrian Master Plan, among other items. Consult the Board’s agenda for details.
September 11 – Planners will present an overview and timeline of the newly launched Pedestrian Master Plan to the Commission on People with Disabilities from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the County Executive Office Building (101 Monroe Street, Rockville, MD). They will ask for feedback about pedestrian issues that are important to people with disabilities.
September 11 – The Montgomery County Historic Preservation Commission will hold a public meeting at 7:30 p.m. in the Planning Department’s auditorium (8787 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring, MD).
September 12 – The Planning Board will review development plans for Montgomery County, among other agenda items. For more details, consult the Planning Board meeting agenda, which will be posted 10 days before the meeting.
September 15 – Planners will engage the public at FutureFest, held from 12 noon to 5 p.m. at the Silver Spring Civic Building (1 Veterans Plaza, Silver Spring, MD), to envision the county’s future through Thrive Montgomery 2050. The event will feature hands-on activities, cutting-edge innovations and immersive cultural exhibits to inspire kids and adults alike.
September 19 – The Planning Board will review development plans for Montgomery County, among other agenda items. For more details, consult the Planning Board meeting agenda, which will be posted 10 days before the meeting.
September 20 – Park(ing) Day reinvents the use of public space by converting metered on-street parking spaces into temporary parks. This year, Montgomery Planning will work with Montgomery Parks to transform a parking space at Fenton Street and Ellsworth Drive in downtown Silver Spring and engage the public in the Thrive Montgomery 2050 plan to envision the future of the county. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
September 20 through September 27 – Long Branch Festival Week will take place at Flower Avenue Urban Park (8746 Flower Ave, Silver Spring, MD) and the shopping center across the street. Organized in partnership with the Montgomery Housing Partnership, this week-long celebration will reimagine a livelier and friendly downtown Long Branch. The Thrive Montgomery 2050 team will be a part of this placemaking effort to create a temporary civic green to host food and retail vendors, Montgomery Parks activities and musical performances. September 21 –Brainstorm ideas for the county’s future with the Thrive Montgomery 2050 team at the Poolesville Day Festival, held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Whalen Commons Park (19701 Fisher Avenue, Poolesville, MD). Staff will be handing out free giveaways and inviting attendees to share their thoughts about improving the county over the next few decades. Learn more about Thrive Montgomery 2050.
September 21 –Celebrate the Planning Board’s approval of the Forest Glen/Montgomery Hills Sector Plan at the Montgomery Hills Street Festival on Georgia Avenue from Columbia Boulevard to Seminary Road. The Thrive Montgomery 2050 team will be there from 3 to 7 p.m. to encourage festival goers to share their thoughts about the future of the county.
September 22 – Planners will be on hand to discuss the Thrive Montgomery 2050 plan with attendees at the Wheaton Arts Parade and Festival, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Wheaton Veterans Urban Park (11200 Amherst Avenue, Wheaton, MD). Festival goers will be encouraged to give feedback on the future challenges and opportunities in the county over the next three decades.
September 25 – The Montgomery County Historic Preservation Commission will hold a public meeting at 7:30 p.m. in the Planning Department’s auditorium (8787 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring, MD).
September 26 – The Planning Board will be briefed on the Shady Grove Sector Plan Minor Master Plan Amendment and 2019 Biennial Monitoring Report for the White Flint Sector Plan and Great Seneca Science Corridor Master Plan, among other items. September 26 – Planners will present the goals and timeline for the newly launched Pedestrian Master Plan to the Commission on Aging at 9:30 a.m. at the North Potomac Community Recreation Center (13860 Travilah Road, Rockville, MD). They will solicit feedback about pedestrian issues that are important to seniors and elderly county residents.
