SILVER SPRING, MD – The Montgomery County Planning Board and the Planning Department, both part of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, are pleased to announce their October 2019 calendar of events. October 3 –The Planning Board will meet to discuss the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission’s Capital Improvements Program for fiscal years 2021-2026, among other items. Consult the Board’s agenda for details, which will be posted 10 days before the meeting.
October 5 – Brainstorm ideas for the county’s future with the Thrive Montgomery 2050 planning team at the Taste of Bethesda food and music festival held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Bethesda’s Woodmont Triangle. Enjoy the performances, sample the menus and discuss the future of the county during this lively event.
October 5 and October 6 – The Burtonsville Placemaking Festival, co-sponsored by Montgomery Planning and the Dallas-based Better Block Foundation, will bring together residents, visitors, local business owners and representatives of civic associations to demonstrate ways of improving this neighborhood setting. The event will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. on October 5 and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on October 6 at the Burtonsville Crossing Shopping Center (15701 Old Columbia Pike, Burtonsville, MD). Planners will encourage participants to discuss their visions for the future of this community and the county.
October 7 – A community workshop for the 2020 update to the Subdivision Staging Policy (SSP) will be held at 7 p.m. at the Silver Spring Civic Building (1 Veterans Plaza, Silver Spring, MD). The SSP provides guidance for determining the adequacy of public infrastructure, including schools and roads, to support new development in the county. RSVP for the meeting online.
October 9 – The Montgomery County Historic Preservation Commission will hold a public meeting at 7:30 p.m. in the Planning Department’s auditorium (8787 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring, MD).
October 10 – The Planning Board will review development plans for Montgomery County, among other agenda items. For more details, consult the Planning Board meeting agenda, which will be posted 10 days before the meeting.
October 10 – A community meeting for the Pedestrian Master Plan will be held from 7 to 8:15 p.m. at the Olney Library (3500 Olney Laytonsville Road, Olney, MD). Planners will discuss the purpose and timeline for this countywide effort and gather feedback from attendees about local walking conditions, challenges and ideas for the plan. October 14 – Planners will discuss the scope and schedule for the Pedestrian Master Plan at a community meeting held from 7 to 9 p.m. at the East County Recreation Center (3310 Gateshead Manor Way, Silver Spring, MD). Attendees are encouraged to provide feedback on local walking conditions and challenges. RSVP for the meeting online.
October 15 and 16 – A community design workshop will be held each day starting at 9 a.m. at the Sandy Spring Museum (17901 Bentley Road, Sandy Spring, MD) to discuss and develop strategies for the Ashton Village Center Sector Plan. A presentation of the ideas and planning concepts generated by participants will be made on October 16 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
October 16 – A community meeting for the Pedestrian Master Plan will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Regional Services Center (4805 Edgemoor Lane, Bethesda, MD). Planners will discuss the goals and schedule for the countywide plan and encourage participants to provide feedback about local walking conditions and challenges. RSVP for the meeting online.
October 16 – A community meeting for the Shady Grove Sector Plan Minor Master Plan Amendment will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Mill Creek Towne Elementary School (177700 Park Mill Drive, Rockville, MD). Planers will discuss the preliminary recommendations for the sector plan amendment.
October 17 – Following the Planning Board meeting, Montgomery Planning will join the Potomac Valley Chapter of the American Institute of Architects at Celebrate Design 2019 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Amp at Strathmore (11810 Grand Park Avenue, North Bethesda, MD). Tickets are $50 each and can be purchased online. The winners of the Montgomery County Design Excellence Awards will be announced at the event.
October 21 – A community meeting will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. for the Pedestrian Master Plan at the Montgomery County Planning Department (8787 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring, MD). Planners will discuss the goals and timeline for the plan, and encourage attendees to discuss their walking experiences in the county. RSVP for the meeting online.
October 22 – The first meeting of the Schools Technical Advisory Team to support the creation of the 2020 Subdivision Staging Policy will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Montgomery County Planning Department (8787 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring, MD).
October 23 – The Montgomery County Historic Preservation Commission will hold a public meeting at 7:30 p.m. in the Planning Department’s auditorium (8787 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring, MD).

October 24 – A community meeting for the Ashton Village Center Sector Plan will be held at the Sandy Spring Museum (17901 Bentley Road, Sandy Spring, MD) from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. to discuss the October 15-16 workshop and its findings, and a proposed outline for the plan.
October 31 – There is no Planning Board meeting scheduled for this day.
