Cabin John Dog Park Opens Tomorrow, Wednesday, September 23! “Howl-o-ween” Grand Opening Celebration, Saturday, October 31

BETHESDA, MD—The brand new dog park at Cabin John Regional Park, 10900 Westlake Drive in Bethesda, opens tomorrow. The new dog park includes two areas—one for large dogs and a separate area for small dogs.

“We are very pleased to announce the opening of the new Cabin John Dog Park,” said Director of Parks Mary Bradford. “The surrounding community has been anxiously awaiting this new park amenity—it should be poodles of fun for our canine companions!”

The Cabin John Dog Park is now the fourth official dog park in the Montgomery Parks system.  There are designated dog exercise areas at Black Hill Regional Park, Ridge Road Recreational Park and Wheaton Regional Park. They are the only public places in Montgomery County where dogs can exercise and enjoy off-leash time.

“Almost daily, we get requests to add more dog parks to the system,” added Bradford.

An additional dog park at Olney Manor Recreational Park is presently under construction and slated for completion later this fall. Park planners have also been working to identify other areas in the parks system for future dog park construction, developing new site selection methods and design requirements for determining where future dog parks could be built throughout the county. The innovative design of the Cabin John Dog Park is informing this process.

“At the Cabin John Dog Park, we have also included rock climbing structures for dog exercise and play,” said Department of Parks Project Manager CJ Lilly. “As part of this project, we’ve also added a plaza area, with a park pavilion, trash containers, drinking fountains and benches in shaded areas for dogs and their owners.”

The new Cabin John Dog Park is the first in the Montgomery County parks system with separate areas for large and small dogs. The large dog park area is about 40,000 square feet in size; the small dog area is 10,000 square feet. The total size of the new Cabin John Dog Park is 50,000 square feet, just over one acre. The dog park is completely fenced and currently FREE to use and open during regular park hours, sunrise to sunset. However, the dog park will be closed from 9:00 am through 11:00 am every Tuesday for weekly park maintenance.

The Department of Parks is planning a grand opening celebration for the new dog park at Cabin John Regional Park on Saturday, October 31—“Howl-O-Ween.” The FREE event will include games, information and plenty of human and dog treats.
