Department of Parks Hosts Rachel Carson Greenway Celebration May 19 & 20

SILVER SPRING, MD-The
Montgomery County Department of Parks will host a Rachel Carson
Greenway Celebration, Saturday, May 19 and Sunday, May 20 in honor of
Carson’s 100th Birthday.

Saturday, May 19, 2007 

Underground Railroad Experience Trail Hikes,
10:00 am, 1:00 pm, 4:00 pm, Woodlawn Cultural Park, 6501 Norwood Road,
Sandy Spring. Interpretive hikes of the Department of Parks’
Underground Railroad Experience Trail.

How Do Fish Breathe?
10:30 am, 12:00 noon, 1:30 pm, Burnt Mills Dam, 10700 Colesville Road,
Silver Spring. Real-life “show and tell” for kids on different kinds of
fish and critters in the Northwest Branch stream.

“Sense of Wonder” Hikes,
11:00 am, 12:30 pm, 2:00 pm, Burnt Mills Dam, 10700 Colesville Road,
Silver Spring.  Hike one of the most popular sections of the Rachel
Carson Greenway during these less than 1-mile park naturalist-led hikes
oriented to children. 

FREE Trolley Rides and FREE Films,
12:00 noon – 5:00 pm, National Capital Trolley Museum, 1313 Bonifant
Road, Colesville. Enjoy free trolley rides courtesy of the Department
of Parks and films about Rachel Carson shown continuously in the
theatre.

Tree Walks,
12:00 noon – 4:00 pm, National Capital Trolley Museum, 1313 Bonifant
Road, Colesville. Visit champion trees in the surrounding Northwest
Branch Recreational Park with Department of Parks tree experts and take
away FREE tree seedlings to plant a tree in Carson’s memory. 

Special Feature: The Night Sky and the Underground Railroad,
7:00 pm, Woodlawn Cultural Park, 6501 Norwood Road, Sandy Spring.
Historian Anthony Cohen will explain how freedom-seeking slaves used
the night sky to guide them northward to freedom. FREE admission.

Rachel Carson Conservation Park Hike,
1:00 pm, Rachel Carson Conservation Park, 22201 Zion Road, Brookeville.
Department of Parks Forest Ecologist led hike highlighting the plants
and trees that make Rachel Carson Conservation Park so special.

Rachel Carson Birthday Party,
2:00 pm, Rachel Carson Conservation Park, 22201 Zion Road, Brookeville.
FREE birthday cake and banner to sign, park naturalist-led kids
activities.
