MEDIA ADVISORY: Department of Parks and Maryland State Highway Administration Hold Community Meeting on Lake Frank Trail Connector, Tuesday, May 11

ROCKVILLE, MD—The Montgomery County Department of Parks and the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) will hold a community meeting to discuss the Lake Frank Trail Connector located in Rock Creek Regional Park. This community meeting is part of the mandatory referral process for the new trail. The trail is an Intercounty Connector (ICC) community stewardship project.

The Lake Frank Trail Connector was approved by the Montgomery County Planning Board in September 2008 as part of the Department of Parks Upper Rock Creek Trail Corridor Plan. In the fall of 2008, SHA began studying and designing the new trail as an ICC community stewardship project.

From March through December 2009 Department of Parks staff and SHA officials have been meeting with community members to review the project and consider alternatives.  Alternatives offered by the community for the location of the trail have been evaluated. After this additional consideration, the Planning Board approved trail alignment has been determined to be the best location for the trail because it is consistent with the existing use of the area as a trail, results in less environmental impact to forested areas than other alternatives and provides an easily accessible connection from the east side of Lake Frank to the Rock Creek Trail. The Department of Parks and SHA are coordinating to add additional plantings as necessary to screen the trail from the surrounding community.

The purpose of this community meeting is to obtain additional public input and ideas on the proposed mandatory referral alignment.

The public may also contact Department of Parks Project Manager Marian Elsasser at Marian.Elsasser@MontgomeryParks.org to submit written comments or for more information.
