BETHESDA, MD—The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) Montgomery County Department of Parks and the Wu Wei Tai Chi Club are hosting a grand opening event for the new Tai Chi Court in Cabin John Regional Park on Saturday, September 17, 2011 from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm.
This is the first Tai Chi court in Montgomery County and only one of a few of its kind in the nation. Dedicated to the memory of David C. Chen, a Rockville resident and founder of the Wu Wei Tai Chi Club, the new Tai Chi Court at Cabin John Regional Park is a 48-foot-diameter circle of flagstone incorporating the shape of a yin/yang symbol and surrounded by elegant benches in a serene natural setting.
This project was made possible through the department’s public/private partnership program. David Chen practiced Tai Chi in Cabin John Regional Park every week for 12 years before he passed away unexpectedly in 2005. His students and friends wanted to remember his life and vision with a lasting monument. Giving back to the community and enhancing the park seemed to be the best way to honor David’s memory.
The grand opening event will include brief remarks, a ribbon cutting, demonstrations by various martial arts groups and a pot luck picnic provided by members and friends of the Wu Wei Tai Chi Club. The event will begin with remarks from about 10:00 am to 11:00 am.
