SILVER SPRING, MD—The Montgomery County Department of Parks will present a concept plan for approval to the Montgomery County Planning Board on Monday to locate Maryland’s first Miracle League baseball field at South Germantown Recreational Park.
This Miracle League proposal is a public/private partnership to develop one Miracle Field for children and adults with varying abilities, in concert with a publically funded youth baseball field and possibly a second Miracle Field in the future, if funding is available. As proposed, the Department of Parks would construct a standard publically funded youth baseball field in concert with the Miracle Field in the first phase of the project, which would include associated field lighting, parking, pathways, plaza area with concession area and improved restrooms and reconfigure and relocate an existing park playground and basketball courts. The Miracle League of Montgomery County would assume full costs of constructing and operating the Miracle Fields and associated infrastructure. The Department of Parks proposes to use the appropriation from its approved Parks Capital Improvements Program (CIP) to fund the youth baseball field and associated infrastructure.
The location of the proposed fields is on the site of the temporary soccer field in the southwest quadrant of Schaffer Road and Germantown Park Drive in South Germantown Recreational Park.
At this meeting, parks staff is asking the Planning Board to: approve the public/private partnership; approve the site design concept; amend the South Germantown Recreational Park Master Plan to accommodate the Miracle Field; and approve submission to the County Council of an amendment to the Parks CIP for the South Germantown Recreational Park SoccerPlex facilities project.
The Department of Parks joined the Miracle League of Montgomery County June 18 for a community meeting to discuss this proposal and gather public input.
