Monday, January 16, at 11 a.m., the Montgomery County Planning Board and elected officials invite the public to a deed transfer ceremony at the historic site and former home of Josiah Henson, a slave that served as Harriet Beecher Stowe’s model for her novel on slavery, “Uncle Tom’s Cabin.”Originally a 3,700-acre tobacco plantation, the one-acre property, including the 18th century main house with a logcabin kitchen wing and other minor historic structures, is located at 11420 Old Georgetown Road, Bethesda.Guided walk-throughs of the historic section follow the ceremony until 1 p.m.

Free parking is available diagonally across the street at the Montgomery Aquatic Center, 5900 Executive Boulevard, Old Georgetown Road and Nicholson Lane.

Last week, the Montgomery County Planning Board unanimously and enthusiastically approved a $1 million real estate contract to purchase the historic site to assure its preservation for future generations.In the coming months, the Board will explore options for restoring the building, interpreting its history and making it accessible to the public.

This re-scheduled meeting gives residents adjacent to Northwest Branch Park an opportunity to hear a proposal by Verizon Wireless to locate a wireless telecommunications facility next to the new location for the National Capital Trolley Museum.

 

Verizon representatives will discuss the need for the proposed facility, present photo simulations of the proposed facility from various views in the surrounding neighborhoods, and present photos of similar facilities in the area.Questions and comments from the audience are welcomed and encouraged.

PLANNING BOARD TO HEAR PROPOSED

WATER AND SEWER PLAN MAP AMENDMENTS

 

The Planning Board will hear testimony and consider recommendations on January 26, 2006, for several water and sewer category changes, recommending that water and/or sewer service to be extended (or denied) to individual properties for the cases listed below.

Two groups of cases will be considered; one group will be decided at an administrative hearing following the Planning Board’s hearing and the County Council will decide the second group.
