Capital Improvement Program is a six-year funding plan for capital projects that is approved by the Planning Board and County Council every two years. The CIP for the Department of Parks includes projects for parkland acquisitions, renovations of park facilities, and new developments within parks. The Recreation Department’s CIP includes projects for new community/recreation centers and aquatic facilities and for renovations to existing facilities.
Recent Department of Parks accomplishments from the current CIP include the construction of Darnestown Square Heritage Park; development of the Wheaton Sports Pavilion (the site of the old Wheaton Ice Rink) featuring an artificial turf playing field suitable for lacrosse, soccer, futsol; reconstruction of Takoma-Piney Branch Local Park, and the renovation of many playgrounds, tennis courts, and ballfields. Additional information on recently completed CIP projects and projects in progress is available at www.parkprojects.org, under the “Capital Improvement Program Projects” link.
Montgomery County Recreation opened the new White Oak Community Recreation Center in 2012. Other projects proposed in the Department’s FY 15-20 CIP include renovations at Good Hope, Ross Boddy and Scotland neighborhood recreation centers, Plum Gar Community Recreation Center, and construction of new Community Recreation Centers in North Potomac and Wheaton along with renovation planning for the Western Outdoor Pool.
