Renovated park will feature basketball courts, new playground equipment, a natural stream and boardwalk.
SILVER SPRING, MD—M-NCPPC Montgomery Parks announced today the start of construction to renovate the Evans Parkway Neighborhood Park in Silver Spring, with completion anticipated in the spring of 2014. The five-acre park located along Georgia Avenue and Cascade Place will be expanded to include an additional 2.46 acres, and updated with a host of new features. The $3.8 million project was approved by the Montgomery County Planning Board on January 18, 2007 and will be funded through the Capital Improvements Program. New park features will include:
- Two half-court basketball courts
- Parallel parking spaces
- New playground equipment
- A natural stream and wider flood plain to replace a concrete lined channel
- A new boardwalk, bridge and paved pedestrian loop trails
- Interpretive signs
- A park gazebo with seating
- Updated landscaping and new rain gardens
The renovation will also incorporate art work integrated into the park design. Ali Della Bitta and Drew Goerlitz team was selected through a nationwide competition done in cooperation with the Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County.
“Another exciting aspect of this renovation is that the project has been selected for a pilot “Sustainable Site Initiative” study,” said Mitra Pedoeem, Division Chief, Park Development Division, Montgomery Parks. “This is akin to building projects which incorporate Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED). It highlights Montgomery Parks’ commitment to sustainability in the renovation and development of our parks.”
