Montgomery Parks Hosts 3rd Annual “Trees Matter” Symposium on November 5, 2014 at the Silver Spring Civic Building

SILVER SPRING, MDMontgomery Parks, part of the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission will bring together some of the country’s leading tree experts for the 2014 Trees Matter Symposium on November 5, 2014 from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Silver Spring Civic Building. The day will focus on health and welfare of trees in our increasingly developed landscapes. Admission is $65. To register, visit www.ParkPASS.org and enter Course #300699.

 

WHO:  Leading tree experts from around the country will discuss innovative efforts to plant, protect and preserve trees in urban and suburban settings.  Featured speakers include:

  • Melanie Choukas-Bradley, Naturalist and teacher in the D.C. area, and author of several acclaimed books, including City of Trees,
  • Kevin T. Smith, Supervisory Plant Physiologist, USDA Forest Service,
  • Guy Sternberg, Certified Arborist, landscape architect, author and owner of Starhill Forest Arboretum,
  • Matthew Foti, President of Matthew R. Foti Landscape and Tree Service, Inc. and featured arborist for WBGH’s “This Old House.”

 

WHAT: The 3rd Annual Trees Matter Symposium will convene experts to discuss the latest research on safeguarding urban trees. Session topics include:

  • “Exploring the ‘City of Trees’ and Rock Creek Park,”
  • “More than Maintenance: Concepts and Practices for the Care of Mature Trees,”
  • Part 1: “Tough Trees for the Landscape,”
    Part 2: “Starhill Forest Arboretum’s Signature Tree Collection and Cultivar Introductions,”
  • “Bare Root Transplanting Large Trees.”
