New Community Gardens at Fenton Street Urban Park and Parklawn Group Picnic Area, Department of Parks Now Accepting Applications

SILVER SPRING, MD—The Montgomery County Department of Parks is now accepting applications for community gardens at Fenton Street Urban Park, 7904 Fenton Street in Silver Spring, and Parklawn Group Picnic Area, 12724 Veirs Mills Road in Rockville.

“Fenton Street Urban Park is a temporary community garden location as there are future plans for this park,” said Department of Parks Community Gardens Coordinator Ursula Sabia Sukinik. “The Parklawn Group Picnic Area is an underutilized site we are repurposing for community gardening.”

Applications for Fenton Street Urban Park’s lottery are being accepted now through February 10. Plots will be assigned in early-March with both garden locations anticipated being opened in April, weather permitting. Online applications for all sites, including Parklawn, begin on February 1, 2011. Guidelines and permitting are available from www.ParksCommunityGardens.org.

The Fenton Street Urban Park Community Garden includes twenty seven 200 square feet plots for an annual fee of $30 per plot and fourteen 400 square feet plots for $50 per year. The Parklawn Community Garden includes fifty 400 square feet plots for $50 annually. Both sites offer water and deer fencing.

The Department of Parks also manages: the Sligo Mill Overlook Community Garden, 6400 Orchard Avenue in Takoma Park, Briggs Chaney Community Garden, 2161 Briggs Chaney Road in Silver Spring, Bradley Park Community Garden, 8701 Hartsdale Avenue in Bethesda, a community garden at South Germantown Recreational Park, 18041 Central Park Circle in Boyds, and an above ground container garden at Maple Avenue, 7620 Maple Avenue in Takoma Park.

“Demand for more community garden locations in the county continues to remain high,” added Sukinik.

Several additional locations are scheduled to open in 2011. For more about current or proposed community garden locations, contact Department of Parks Community Gardens Coordinator Ursula Sabia Sukinik at 240-876-7598 or email Ursula.SabiaSukinik@MontgomeryParks.org.
