Planning Board resumes its meetings on September 7, Planning Department holds community meetings for Master Plan of Highways and Transitways

SILVER SPRING, MDThe Montgomery County Planning Department, part of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, is pleased to announce its September 2017 calendar of events. These events offer opportunities for the Planning Department staff to discuss policies and engage with the public. Montgomery County Planning Department and Board Events in September 2017

September 1 – Tickets are on sale for the third annual Celebrate Design event, the reception and award ceremony co-sponsored by Montgomery Planning and the Potomac Valley Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). The 2017 Design Excellence Awards for the best in building and open space designs will be announced at the event, to be held from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Silver Spring Civic Building on Thursday, October 19. Tickets cost $35 each and can be purchased online.

September 1 – Tickets go on sale for the Montgomery Modern bus tour of modern homes and buildings in the county, to be held on Sunday, October 8 from 1 to 3:30 p.m. This year’s event will focus on architecture designed by the modernist firm Cohen, Haft & Associates. The tour is presented by the Montgomery County Planning Department, AIA-Potomac Valley, Docomomo-DC and Bender JCCGW. Tickets, which can be purchased online, cost $40 for AIA and Docomomo members, and $50 for nonmembers.

September 5 – The exhibit Montgomery Modern goes on view at the Bender Jewish Community Center of Greater Washington  (6125 Montrose Road, Rockville, MD) through October 31. The display of texts and photos is based on the award-winning book Montgomery Modern: Modern Architecture in Montgomery County, 1930-1979.

September 7 – The Planning Board returns from its August recess and will resume its schedule of meetings. On the agenda are a briefing about the Energized Public Spaces Master Plan and the Biennial Master Plan Monitoring Report for the 2010 White Flint Sector Plan, 2010 Great Seneca Science Corridor Master Plan and 2006 Shady Grove Sector Plan. September 11 – A community meeting to discuss the updates to the Master Plan of Highways and Transitways will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Planning Department auditorium (8787 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring, MD). RSVP to attend the event.

September 13 – A community meeting focused on the updated Master Plan of Highways and Transitways will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. in Room West A in the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Regional Services Center (4805 Edgemoor Lane, Bethesda, MD). RSVP to attend the event.

September 14 – The Planning Board will meet to review several regulatory cases and zoning text amendments. For more details about the session, consult the Planning Board agenda, which is posted 10 days before the meeting.

September 15 – The Park and Planning Departments will celebrate Park(ing) Day with an agricultural-themed pop-up park in downtown Silver Spring. This annual worldwide event encourages artists, designers and residents to transform metered parking spots into temporary public parks.

September 18 – A community meeting to discuss the updates to the Master Plan of Highways and Transitways will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Rockville Memorial Library (21 Maryland Avenue, Rockville, MD). RSVP to attend the event.

September 18 –At this Planning Board meeting, the Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection will brief Board members about its findings on the water quality of streams in the county’s Special Protection Areas. For more information about this meeting, consult the Planning Board agenda, which is posted online 10 days before the session. This meeting is being held on Monday because the Planning Board will not meet on Thursday, September 21 in respect for the Jewish new year celebration, Rosh Hashana.

September 20 – A community meeting to discuss the updates to the Master Plan of Highways and Transitways will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. in Room D of the Upcounty Regional Services Center (12900 Middlebrook Road, Germantown, MD). RSVP to attend the event.

September 28 – The Planning Board will meet to review proposed developments and plans. For details about specific items, consult the Planning Board agenda, which is posted online 10 days before the session.
