Planning Expert to Present Smart Growth Scenarios at Montgomery Planning Board

SILVER SPRING, MD – At a 7 p.m. Thursday, May 31 presentation
to the Montgomery County Planning Board, a Maryland smart growth expert will
discuss ways to match anticipated development with public services and how to
encourage walker-friendly urban growth.

Gerrit Knaap of the National Center for Smart Growth at the
University of Maryland is the latest expert in the Montgomery County Planning
Board’s Growth
Management Speaker Series. Knaap, who has studied Washington metropolitan
area zoning patterns and smart-growth development scenarios in Maryland, will
provide suggestions about how Montgomery County planners might learn from his
findings.

Knaap also has analyzed the effect of ordinances matching
growth to public services and inclusionary zoning, which allows special uses
like “in-law” apartments, on housing markets in California. His presentation,
“Case Studies from the National Center for Smart Growth,” will include a
question-and-answer period.
