SILVER SPRING – Montgomery County planners, who have begun work on a new plan for the Life Sciences Center area west of I-270, will host a series of public meetings beginning in October to update residents, business owners, and anyone interested in their efforts.
The Gaithersburg West Master Plan focuses primarily on the future of the Shady Grove Life Sciences Center, home to a major hospital, academic institutions and the largest concentration of advanced technology companies in Montgomery County. The Center is home to such institutions as Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, Johns Hopkins University – Montgomery County Campus and the Universities at Shady Grove and companies such as Human Genome Sciences and Bio Reliance.
Planners will present an overview of area-wide issues, ideas under consideration for the Life Sciences Center and invite participants to provide feedback.
The plan will recommend ways to continue to attract science and technology to the area, first identified as a center for technology and advanced research by county officials in the 1980s. Planners hope to introduce more uses within the Life Sciences Center to create a vibrant, dynamic, walkable place. The plan also will address the route and stations proposed for the Corridor Cities Transitway, a light rail or rapid bus project under consideration by state transportation officials.
In addition to the Life Sciences Center, the Gaithersburg West Master Plan includes several areas within the county’s jurisdiction that are surrounded by the city of Gaithersburg as well as residential neighborhoods west of Quince Orchard and Longdraft roads.
